A cycling trip is the ideal solution for a wonderful yet low-budget holiday. The secret to a hassle-free journey? Good preparation. If you follow our handy tips and tricks, you will be able to take all your belongings along with you and discover Flanders cheaply.

Tip 1: Choose the right route

Tip 2: Rent a holiday bike and bicycle bags

Want to give a cycling trip a try but you don’t have the right gear? Or perhaps you don’t want to take everything with you in your car or on the plane? Then just rent your bike and bags at a bicycle rental company near the start of your route.

Tip 3: Use public transport

With the bike on the train, you can travel smoothly back to your starting point, the airport or the bike rental.

  1. Find the railway stations that fit your cycling holiday route. Via our route planner you can display the train stations on the map via the POI selection or check this network map of the SNCB for an overview of all train connections
  2. Then choose the smoothest train connection via the BikeOnTrain planner, with train carriages adapted for cyclists. These are trains with a low entry and enough space for bikes. On the BikeonTrain planner, you can also see in advance how many places are available for bikes.  Try to avoid rush-hour trains as much as possible.
  3. Next, buy your train ticket (online) from SNCB and choose the bike supplement. You pay 4 euro per bicycle per one-way journey, regardless of the destination in Flanders/Belgium.
  4. Arrive at the station on time and speak to the train conductor before boarding. He will tell you where there are bicycle places available. In specially provided train carriages, you travel together with your bike.

Tip 4: Find places to stay on your route

Good preparation is everything. Therefore, check via the route planner where you want to spend the night. On our route planner you will find all the accommodation tailor-made for holiday cyclists. So you can always be sure of a place to recharge your batteries (read: legs). Looking for a specific type of accommodation that fits your budget? Filter the offer via the POI selection.
